There are several improvements in the area of AppleScript, calendars, and the search UI. There are fixes on exports, focused editing, VoiceOver functionality in Preferences, and other crashes.  This beta fixes a few crashes, including using the Find panel in Focused Editing, setting the text zoom under 100%, and open the Journal Template window if a template was already set. There is also a way to see the amount of found entries when searching if the Entries List is on the left or right of the window (this was already possible when it was on top). This will hopefully be the last beta of this release so please let me know of any issues you have.

 This beta has fixes for saving the status of the status bar and sorting of tags in the Change Tags sheet. New editing windows should remember the last size when you make a new one now. The "Encrypt" button has been removed from the view that you see when you select a locked journal but you can still control the encryption status from the Inspector.  MacJournal 7.3 has a few new features and a few more bug fixes over 7.2.1. On the new feature side, a new French localization has been added. The Detect Duplicates feature has been given a dedicated new UI to review and take action on duplicates, replacing the many journals of aliases that was there before. Some other UI have been refreshed to improve the layout, including the Unlock Journal sheet.

On the bug fix side, there are fixes for showing the Batch Change sheet and making changes. There behavior fixes for Sidebar with collapsing things and reordering items. Fixed an issue with the Related Files feature and opening files in other apps. Fixed adding tags via the field in the Inspector. Fixed column sizing in the Entries List. There are other smaller fixes as well.

 This beta fixes an issue printing multiple pages from an entry. It also replaces the code to convert Markdown to rich text, which should make the Markdown preview window quicker and more correct. There are some fixes for exporting and there is now a "None" option in the sorting menu in the contextual menu for journals to match the equivalent menu in the menu bar.

MacJournal 7.2

 This release has a few small new features as well as more UI updates when running on Big Sur. The window titlebar/toolbar area should fit it more with other apps on Big Sur and there are newer standardized images used throughout the UI. There's also new options to export location information and some new color presets for Focused Editing. The tab bar also got a visual overhaul and it should work better.

On the bug fix side, there are fixes with AppleScript, changing the background color in the Inspector, fixes with encrypted journals, fixes with Navigation modes, macOS dark mode, custom fonts in the Entries list, saving recordings, printing with Markdown. There are also some additions to the Help documentation.

MacJournal 7.1.1

 MacJournal 7.1.1 is the first release of MacJournal compiled for Apple Silicon. If you have a new Mac with Apple Silicon chip, MacJournal will now be able to run without any translation using Rosetta. For everyone else, this release fixes an issue with colors in dark mode causing text and/or the insertion point to disappear. If you have a custom background color or picture, the colors should be as visible as they used to be. There are some other rare crashes fixed as well.

 This release is largely the same as 7.1b1 (but with a small performance change for the Markdown preview window). The big changes here for users of the new Big Sur OS release are fixes for some toolbar items and for the Inspector area. See the notes for 7.1b1 for more details about what is in here.

 This release adds some new features while continuing to include bug fixes. On the feature side, an entry's status should take up less room in the Sidebar, added a button in the Inspector to show the Tags sheet more easily, entry text should be inverted in dark mode, added controls to control the search options in more places, and added a way to control sort order from the contextual menu of a journal. On the bug fix side, a crash unlocking journals is fixed, using Services from a web browser should grab the page URL again, the close button in a tab should be fixed, the book UI has been disabled to fix an issue, and other various fixes. This release also moves the minimum OS requirement up to 10.14.4 (the policy is to support the current release and one prior so this move is well overdue). A number of issues on Big Sur have been fixed as well.

 This release fixes a few issues with the 7.0.3 release, most notably a loss of keyboard focus when the auto-save happens for a new entry for the first time. This is a small bugfix release to clean up one or two issues from the changes in 7.0.3 to fix a data loss issue. It fixes an issue converting an entry to plain text (and back to rich text). This fixes some issues with with Navigation modes, like Tags. There's also a new preference to disable listening for syncing with iOS devices if you want to avoid opening a potential connection on your Mac. There are also some more changes to make auto-saving more reliable, as well as a second backup file for saved entry text as it is saved. The last 20 non-encrypted entries will be saved in an additional backup.

This is a small bug-fix release for 7.0.2. There is a change to how the UI is set when changing selection to reuse fewer parts of the UI to try and resolve an issue where auto-save stops working. Please try this release and let me know if you run into issues with saving.

There are also fixes for Batch Change, Focused Editing, and the items in the default toolbar (the Quick Look item is replaced with the Sidebar item).

MacJournal 7.0.1 has been released! This is mostly a bug fix release but has a few small improvements, such as new toolbar items for styles, a new column in the Entries list for links, and an easier way to get to the Export All menu item. It also should fix a bug with displaying your entry text at zoom levels over 100%. There is also a new Danish localization!

I plan to make releases like this more frequent in the future to avoid critical fixes building up so expect more releases soon!

I debated making this the final release but decided to do one more beta before shipping the final release in a week, hopefully with no changes. This beta fixes issues with Focused Editing, the unlock sheet showing up again right after unlocking, text separators, some issues dragging entries, a VoiceOver change, an issue opening MacJournal links, and an issue with the resulting filename after exporting entries. This release also adds a new help article about tags. I hope to keep adding help articles over time so please let me know if there's a topic that you think should have one.

Status Update

There hasn't been a lot going on in this space for a little while unfortunately and the reason is that I've been sick for several weeks now. It's nothing serious, but I likely had the flu and it's been keeping me down since mid-December. I haven't been able to respond to any email or get the 7.0.1 release out as I had planned. However, I'm feeling better now and I'm going to try and catch up with what I missed. My apologies if I missed your email while I was away and I will try to get to everything in time. Hi all, this is the third beta for 7.0.1. My aim is to get this release out during September so this will be one of the last beta. It is also the first release that is "notarized" by Apple so it will avoid any warnings on the to-be-released macOS Catalina release. There are also bug fixes for entries in tab, converting a rich entry to plain text, searching entries in encrypted journals, the contextual menu for journals, hiding the Entries List, and the "New Entry from Web Page" menu item. The "Export All" menu item is also exposed by default now (it used to require the Option key). Please try it out and let me know of any issues using the Help menus "Report" menu item.

There was a change in beta 3 of 7.0 to try and fix a Mojave compatibility issue that unfortunately broke line wrapping. This beta fixes an issue with the Clean Up, re-added entry counts for smart journals in the sidebar, and fixed a focused editing issue. Text Zoom works differently here where you'll get a horizontal scroll bar when using it in certain cases, but this should hopefully fix text issues that people on Mojave have experienced. Also, the Picasa support has been removed as Google has turned that off on their end.

MacJournal 7 is a brand new version of MacJournal with lots of new features. I'll have more to say about this release soon but this is the first pre-release for testing. Some of the new features include a brand new map view for looking at entries, updated timeline, improved backups, improvements to the tabs, added outline entries, improvements to searching and blogging, improved separate editing windows, additional metadata for entries like duration, performance and user interface improvements (including Mojave Dark Mode). 6.1.7 is a small followup release to 6.1.6, which came out about a week ago. Some users were seeing issues where entries and journals would duplicate themselves while using MacJournal. This apparently was due to how MacJournal reacts to the system it is running on telling it that its data changed outside of MacJournal. This release tries to address this in a few different way. First, it improves the strategy used to merge the data from disk to eliminate cases where it might duplicate something. The second is to stop paying attention to these messages from the system in cases where it doesn't make much sense. If the document isn't on something like Dropbox, these notifications are likely spurious (and may be a bug in the operating system itself) and would just cause unnecessary work for MacJournal. This is now turned off for most cases and I will look into perhaps turning this general ability back on in the future after testing with future versions of the operating system.

This beta has some bug fixes and improvements in behavior. It also should improve behavior when facing conflicts with data on Dropbox since Dropbox has its own way of handling conflicts. Other than that, large images should look better in certain WordPress templates, the default auto-save time is now shorter, most of the items in the Text Cleanup menu will work in the Topic field, and double-clicking an entry with content that can't be edited in MacJournal directly will open the best application for that content directly.

There are mostly bug fixes in this beta over the last one. For example, refreshed categories will now be saved correctly when you are posting an entry to a blog. When syncing a document with an iOS device for the first time, there will be an extra message saying so just in case that is unexpected.

One change that you might not see is to how MacJournal deals with changes from other device using the same data over Dropbox. While opening the same place on more than one machine was never recommended, it sometimes happens and this release should hopefully handle it better by merging in the changes from the updated file on disk instead of wholly replacing the opened document, which may have some unsaved changes.

This is the first beta of the 6.1 release. There are a lot of changes in this release, but not all of them may be immediately apparent. For example, this release should improve performance and memory efficiency. There are several new features to use as well. There's a new live Markdown preview window available. You can add a new column to the Entries list for which journal the entry is from. You can see the character count for an entry next to the word count in the bottom bar. There's a new item in the Format menu to re-apply the default style to a selection of text. There is a new German localization. You can now rename tags in the Change Tags sheet. There are many smaller fixes and improvements for things like blogging, smart journals, syncing, and importing. See the full list in the Version History. It's time for another new beta of another upcoming release. It's worth saying a bit about what this release is for though. Tumblr decided to pull the plug on the version of the API that MacJournal is using next month, so this version switches to the new API. This requires a different way of logging in when you do a post, so you'll see a different, web-based login screen for Tumblr now. While I was at it, I did the same thing for Blogger, which also had a new API. This also has the web-based login now, but it should be more compatible with modern Google features.

Other than all that blogging stuff, there are some fixes elsewhere in the app. There is fix for an issue with tooltips on Mountain Lion, a fix for over-zealous crash reporting, and a few rare crashes. There are also performance enhancements for very large encrypted journals and selecting multiple entries.

Because of the Tumblr situation and the time it takes to get a release reviewed and posted, I didn't submit 6.0.5 to the Mac App Store, opting instead to get the Tumblr fix ready and do a quick 6.0.6 release and submit that instead. So I plan to submit this next week to the store. The direct distribution release will come a bit after that, but before the end of the month. Please give this beta a try (especially Tumblr and Blogger users) and let me know of any problems because the final will be out soon! You can submit bug reports using the Help menu's Report a Bug.

Catching the leading edge of June, here's a new beta build of MacJournal. There are some more performance improvements in this build, particularly with smart journals. There are also several changes to support sandboxing, which is a required change for the Mac App Store. Sandboxing isn't enabled for these builds so those changes won't be obvious, but it's important to make sure there are no regressions the things that you use normally.

MacJournal 6.0.5 is the next release of MacJournal for the Mac, both via direct distribution and the Mac App Store. If you don't have 6.0.4, don't worry: that release was only for the Mac App Store. There are a lot of fixes in this release, so please give everything that you do normally a thorough testing. Most of the changes are behind the scenes, so there shouldn't be many differences when using the application (except for the bugs fixed). Syncing with an iOS device has also received a lot of attention, so let me know if you have any trouble syncing with the current version of the iOS apps. Performance should also be better, especially when launching the application.

Remember that beta releases are only for testing, so please make sure you have a backup of your data before trying this out (MacJournal will also make a special backup when launching). Also, this beta is usable only in demo mode for App Store users.

The big goals with this release are performance and stability. Well, performance, stability, and export. Several bugs that could cause crashes are fixed, as well as issues that could prevent proper content searching. Search indexing should also be faster, as well as any other situation where you're loading a lot of entry text all at once (such as exporting). Multiple selection of entries should also be faster. Several issues with export have been fixed, including several file naming issues.

If you obtained MacJournal from the Mac App Store, you can get the update from the normal App Store update mechanism when Apple approves the update, which should be soon (judging from past experiences).

A word on localizations: unfortunately, they are still underway. We are working hard to update the localizations right now, but none of them are complete enough for this release. Once any of the localizations is ready, a new release will include them as soon as possible.

A few more small fixes in this beta, and one or two larger ones. There are a few more fixes for encrypted journals, including exporting certain entries out of them. The separate entry editing windows should remember their size and position and show up when you relaunch on Lion. Performance of some things, including multiple selection, should also be improved.

This is the first beta for 6.0.3, another small bug fix release. This fixes a few crashers, as well as fixing search indexing for those that have been experiencing it (depending on how your data are structured). There are a few tiny UI differences, including reorganizing the Format menu a bit to match TextEdit better (something I meant to do before 6.0), and requiring the Command key to move something in the Sidebar or Entries List to the Trash to reduce accidental actions. Performance should also be improved.

Please let me know of any problems using the Report an Issue item in the Help menu. If you have purchased MacJournal via the App Store, this beta won't recognize that license right now. I'm looking into ways of letting App Store customers test betas in the future.

Here comes the most recent beta release of MacJournal 6. This is 6.0.2b1. The goals for this release are performance, reliability, and minor UI improvements.

Performance of smart journals in situations where there are a lot of them and/or a lot of entries to search should be better. You may see the smart journals update not all at once; for large amounts of entries, the search happens in the background so as not to block the user interface. In that case, you’ll see the count for the smart journal increase in situations like unlocking a journal that reveals a bunch of new entries. Smart journals searching entry content should also work better after an iOS sync.

Certain encrypted journals from version 5 that had trouble unlocking in version 6 should be fixed. Encrypted journals should also be a bit faster as well.

In other news, “Send to MobileMe” should work better, as should popovers on Snow Leopard. The Backup Browser should work better for restoring entire journals and should let you unlock journals to view their contents. In the “Send to Other Blog” menu, you’ll see a light gray indication of where that particular blog is specified, in case you want to remove it. Exporting with the new “Automatic” format should work better, and you can specify which entry metadata you want to include in textual entries.

MacJournal 6.0 and 6.0.1b1

As you may have seen from a few other websites, MacJournal 6 was released last week! After 14 months of development, I’m thrilled that it’s out for everyone to use. I’m very proud of this release.

However, any large release has its share of small issues that need fixing. I aim to pick off the vast majority of the problems that have been reported with 6.0.1. So far, the biggest issue is that for some configurations, MacJournal has trouble quitting cleanly. Either it never quits, or it quits after a minute or so of spinning the CPU. These issues should be solved for 6.0.1. Today I’m releasing the first and only planned beta for 6.0.1 for those that want to try it out.

Apple's new operating system, Lion, came out last week and some users have wondered how MacJournal works with it. I'm happy to report that I've been using the current version of MacJournal with all of the developer seeds and the final release without any trouble. This is the second beta of 5.2.7. There are some fixes for iOS device syncing, especially in the case of "Keep Both" conflict resolution. Also, any deleted entries on the Mac will be placed in the Trash instead of deleted immediately. There are a few other assorted fixes, including ones for dragging journals between documents, and display of the word count field and search options buttons in extreme situations.

Another release; more syncing fixes. On that front, the "system clocks are too different" warning has been modified to show up only with a 60 second difference or more. Even if it shows, you can also still continue with the sync. An issue preventing the Mac from showing up in the device list should also be fixed. There were some other sync issues that are fixed as well.

But it's not all syncing! There are fixes for Magic Mouse users, blog servers with self-signed HTTPS certificates, smart journals, and more.

There is an important fix in this beta: a fix for iOS devices that don't show a Mac you want to sync with on certain networks. The issue was in MacJournal, but it only presented itself on certain network configurations, so you may not have seen it. But if you were in a situation where the Mac didn't show up on your iPhone or iPad even though you're sure the two devices are on the same network, this could be the fix for you.

There are also some other fixes for rare crashes, blogging to servers with a self-signed HTTPS certificate, and others. Please let me know of any issues.

Another day, another series of betas. There are a few minor fixes in there, but if you're having trouble with the new "your clocks are too different" check with touch device syncing, this beta for you.

A word about this check: I had a conversation with a user a few weeks ago that was seeing consistent data loss—entries were getting deleted every time he synced. We traced this down to a difference in clocks between the two devices. MacJournal uses the modification dates of the entries compared to the date of the last sync to decide what to sync. If one machine thinks it's really 30 or 40 seconds later or earlier than it really is, the syncing can go awry because it might decide something should be deleted that really shouldn't. The check was meant to prevent issues like that. The threshold is set at 25 seconds in 5.2.5. This release extends it to 60 seconds and also allows you to continue syncing after seeing the warning. It's still important to keep your system clocks as close as possible (since there really is only one correct time and all of your computers should be as close as possible to that), but since so many people were syncing successfully even with incorrect system clocks, it seems like a good idea to re-enable that. Please give it a try and let me know if you're having problems syncing.

5.2.5 will be a smaller release than 5.2.4 and meant to address some issues in that release and some issues discovered with syncing the recent mobile releases. To that end, there is a fix for an error that can occur during syncing that some people with PDFs were seeing. There’s also a fix for blogging with PDFs. VoiceOver support is improved in the calendar and tab bar, as well as better international support. I also reverted behavior for the “shaded” days in the calendar to include just the entries in the current journal until I can work out a better way to accomplish what I was going for in 5.2.4.

Please let me know of any problems using the “Report an Issue” item in the Help menu. If everything looks okay here and no more mobile support is required, this should be reaching public release status soon.

As is my custom, I forgot about posting something about the final release. However, 5.2.4 came out a week or two ago. Going forward, there will likely be a 5.2.5 at some point soon, but as a much smaller release than 5.2.4. “Synchronize” is now available when syncing with iOS devices for the first time. What happens is that if the data sets are completely distinct (as in created separately), they can be safely merged. If there is some overlap and some other issue causes the system to think the two devices have never synced before, a Replace sync will be necessary to restore good working order as before.

As a historical footnote, upgrading data from MacJournal 2.1 and before is supported once again.

Here is the next beta of MacJournal 5.2.4. This is an unofficial final candidate build. That is, I'm not expecting to have to change anything before the final public release. In terms of what has changed in this beta, a few bug fixes and a few syncing changes. Starting a sync with an iPhone will do a backup first (just like with MobileMe). The automatic sync behavior is on by default now, but you can disable it. MacJournal entry URLs are now created with their IDs instead of topics, making for greater stability if you rename the entries. Also, you can sort search results in the entries list and that sorting will be remembered separately.

It's another beta! This beta adds an explicit "Import from Journler" menu item in the File menu that does a much better job than dragging a specific folder into the sidebar ever could. It also fixes a regression in an earlier beta with creating links to entries and showing the status sheet for the daily backup. Holding down the Option key when clicking the back or forward buttons in the calendar will now jump a year in that direction. The "magnify" gesture to change text zoom is now off by default since it seem it got more accidental use than intentional. There are other changes, so check out the Version History when you get it and let me know of any problems.

There are a few bug fixes and regressions fixed in this beta. There are also a few new (very minor) things included here. "More" tags for blogs will be automatically recognized and let through to the server, even if you have "Escape > and <" turned on. If you hold the Option key when connecting a touch device, you can choose to which document you'd like it to sync. I added a new debugging tool in the Help menu: a network log for seeing what is happening during blogging. There are also some improvements regarding touch device syncing: large syncs should do better now.

This is the first beta of 5.2.4. It has more changes than seem evident in the UI, but there are a few changes that might help you. Line endings with Blogger are improved yet again. The right text margins when you have text zoom set to greater than 100% should also be fixed. There are some changes to wiki links, internationalization, and Services as well. Please try it out and let me know of any problems.

The best ways to report problems are with the Report a Bug menu item in the Help menu or the MacJournal Support Forums. Make sure to include what version of MacJournal you are using.

5.2 came out a little over a week ago and 5.2.1 fixes a few small bugs found in that release. Download it now. Among the useful changes, PNG images will upload to blog servers and look better. Configuring new Picasa settings should work better now. Spell checking should work better in Full Screen. There are a few other small changes, which you can check out in the Version History item in the Help menu.

This beta encapsulates some changes I made that I wanted to get out before the final release. There are some tweaks to HTML export, the first-launch experience is fixed, and the "Save As" menu item will now worked more as expected when used on the main document. There is also a workaround for a crash in the OS with URL caching. Please let me know of any troubles.

Mostly assorted small updates in this one. There's a "Reveal in Finder" button in the Advanced Preferences to show the current main data file in the Finder (which will help me with support). For Leopard or Snow Leopard users, the behavior of smart quotes in tricky situations should be much better. A few crashes are fixed, HTML formatting should be improved for links with smart quotes in them, the entries list should hide correctly after a search, and so forth. Let me know of any problems as this will likely be released sometime this month.

An assorted collection of minor enhancements and bug fixes. Recorded video should play back correctly now. Accessibility and VoiceOver support has been improved. Uploading to MobileMe via the Share menu should work better. When both the sidebar and vertical entries list are on the screen, only one set of Add and Action buttons will be visible. If you open the File menu and hold the Control, you'll see a new item to add a journal at the top level, no matter what is selected. This beta has as few fixes here and there. Really, the release is closing down at this point (hopefully). Emailing non-textual entries (such as PDFs) should work now. You can specify a translucent (or completely clear) background color for Full Screen if you want to see your desktop. There are small fixes for MobileMe HTML upload, back/forward history navigation, maintaining selection while deleting items, and configuring attachment servers. The one note that is worth mentioning by itself is the iWeb functionality: it's never worked very well due to a very limited interface made available by Apple. An interface they have chosen to remove entirely, it seems. So, for now, the corresponding functionality has been removed from MacJournal while I investigate another solution.
