As you may have seen from a few other websites, MacJournal 6 was released last week! After 14 months of development, I’m thrilled that it’s out for everyone to use. I’m very proud of this release.
However, any large release has its share of small issues that need fixing. I aim to pick off the vast majority of the problems that have been reported with 6.0.1. So far, the biggest issue is that for some configurations, MacJournal has trouble quitting cleanly. Either it never quits, or it quits after a minute or so of spinning the CPU. These issues should be solved for 6.0.1. Today I’m releasing the first and only planned beta for 6.0.1 for those that want to try it out.
Here is 6.0.1b1:
MacJournal_6.0.1b1.zip
Please let me know of any problems with this release via the “Report an Issue” menu item in the Help menu. Keep in mind though that this is a beta, and it’s always good to make sure you have backups of your important data when trying out a beta.

I tried running "Check for Updates..." on my MacJournal, but it keeps saying that "MacJournal 5.2.8 is currently the newest version available."
Since MacJournal is a paid upgrade, it's not offered via the automatic upgrade system in version 5. I wouldn't want someone to upgrade and not realize what they are doing and then have to go through some extra steps to get back to what they want. You can get the upgrade from Mariner's website at http://marinersoftware.com and installing it will use all of your same settings and data as version 5 going forward.
I bought the upgrade key to support your development.
I really wants you to incorporate iCloud back-up function, and function to browse the data through web browser. Though I tried to switch to Evernote, I found that its editor is not easy to use comparing to MacJournal.
I has recently strated to use Diigo's Qiuck Note with Chrome on Windows, and it is easy and simple to use just for text documenting especially in Chrome. Aren't you thinking of collaborating with such new Cloud business player? I think the introduction of iCloud can be a good opportunity for you to change MacJournal business model.
Hi Dan - great update! Maybe I missed it, by one major issues for me is the lack of cloud syncing possibilities. Actually, I upgraded mainly for that reason. Wifi syncing just doesn't cut it for me. I really hope its in the pipeline - or that I just missed it and you can tell me how to enable it :-)
Best, Mads
akio: Thanks for buying the upgrade. I do plan on supporting iCloud data storage, but I don't know the full details of what is possible there on the Mac. Apple exerts some control over this, so I'm still investigating what is possible. I'm also going to work with 3rd party file syncing on iOS so you can use Dropbox (and maybe others) to edit the same data in both places.
Madsv: Thanks, I'm glad you like the new version! Please see the above answer as well.
Thanks again, everyone.
HI Dan. I wish the year 2012 will be a good year for your and MacJournal!
I am pleased to know that you have a plan to support iCloud. If MacJournal becomes one of the firts third party Mac app, it would be fantastic as a user since version 2.6!
If iCloud incorporation is not easy, please find a cloud solution by collaborating with other cloud Apps.
Dude you rock!
I've noticed that after I publish content from MacJournal into Wordpress, an extra line is added… very annoying.
I followed this thread and it seems to work!

Thanks!

Thanks to both of you! I'm glad you like the new version.
Hi Dan,
I’ve tried the new version (i think it was 6.0) but I’m not really happy with it.
A few of my notes have been empty within the new version (probably very old ones created in 2.1 or 2.5)
Also the new Icon and the green Journal Icons look really ugly to me (which is a personal preference). But what’s the intention of puttin a nice Journal into a cheap and oldstyle drawer?
I’m not a fan of all black & grey icons either but I could live with that, but missing entries, unattractive journal icons and very very slow support of the iPhone/iPad apps (of which I don’t know if they are programmed by you) make me wonder, if I really should upgrade to the new version.
I’m a really big fan of MJ since the 2.1 days, and I always upgraded and paid to support future development. But the new v6 has absolutely nothing that makes me even want to upgrade.
Also v6 should really have started a new MJ file and leave the v5 untouched, so one could evaluate and compare the apps more easily without having to restore the old file “by hand”.
Hi Martin,
I'm sorry there wasn't a killer feature in the upgrade for you. Is there something I can add in the future that you've been looking for?
I'm sorry about the lost data as well. Try the Recover Missing Entry Text item in the Help menu to see if that does anything. It might also be there in a backup; email me directly and we can try some other things to try and get it back.
Thanks.
Hi Dan,
for now I’ve reverted to MJ 5.2.8 and restored the empty entries from a backup so nothing is lost.
The “feature“ i’d like to see most, is reliability. I’ve lost some images in some entries some versions ago and had to manually check old updates to get all data back. Now v6 seems to forget some data again. That’s not something that makes me want to buy an upgrade. As I have used MJ for some years, there are hundreds of entries inside my database and I neither want nor could check every entry after an update. It should simply work and I like to be able to trust MJ.
This doesn’t mean that I don’t trust it today or that I encounter major poblems. I like it, use it every day and don’t want to switch to anything else. But I would feel better, if I could trust it 101% instead of 99%.
Other than that, I really would like to see a fully capable iPad/iPhone app. It should support encrypted journals, RTF editing and image support. DevonThink to go has added RTF suaport in their latest update so it should not be impossible.
Best regards
I'm sorry that this happened. If you'd be will to tell me some more about what happened, please email me as that will be easier to discuss there instead of here (use the Report an Issue item in the Help menu). I'd like to know more about the entries that were affected to see if there's something I can do to prevent this in the future. 100% reliability is absolutely my goal so anything I can do to achieve that is something that I'm interested in. Thanks.
